Ubisoft Cancels Prince of Persia Remake, Six Games in Total, With More Titles Delayed

In a nutshell

  • Ubisoft has cancelled six games, including the anticipated Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake.
  • Seven other titles have been delayed to meet “enhanced quality benchmarks.”
  • The cancellations reflect Ubisoft’s ongoing restructuring and focus on fewer, higher-quality projects.

Ubisoft has announced a sweeping restructuring of its game development pipeline, confirming the cancellation of six titles currently in production.

Among the most notable is the highly anticipated Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake, a project that has faced repeated delays and development challenges since its 2020 reveal. Part of the cancellations are four unannounced titles, including three new IPs and a mobile title, with the last title being unknown.

All this, according to a report from VGC, which also revealed that seven other games have been delayed, citing the need to ensure “enhanced quality benchmarks are fully met.” It is believed that the Assassin’s Creed Black Flag remake is one of these delayed titles.

Prince of Persia Remake Statement From Ubisoft

The Prince of Persia remake was intended to revive one of Ubisoft’s most iconic franchises, but its troubled development has been a point of concern for fans. Originally slated for release in 2021, the game was delayed multiple times, with Ubisoft Montreal eventually taking over development from its Indian studios.

A statement from Ubisoft about the Prince of Persia remake cancellation says the decision is disappointing because “the game carries enormous meaning for fans and for the teams who worked on it.”

“While the project had real potential, we weren’t able to reach the level of quality you deserve, and continuing would have required more time and investment than we could responsibly commit. And, we didn’t want to release something that fell short of what The Sands of Time represents.”
