Silent Hill: Townfall is the latest entry in the long-running series and, with it, the first full-length title meant to be experienced in first-person.
During a media preview, series producer Motoi Okamoto and Screen Burn Writer and Director Jon McKellan explained how this decision came to be.
Silent Hill: Townfall and its First-person POV
McKellan emphasized that creating the game in the first-person perspective was one of the first decisions they made, which is grounded in a couple of reasons.
“Choosing to do Silent Hill: Townfall in first-person was one of the first decisions we made.”
“We felt as a horror experience in this claustrophobic town where the size of the buildings is small, and the streets are very cramped. It feels appropriate to be in that kind of perspective; to make use of that.

The second reason was more of a gameplay reason related to the CRTV.
“The gameplay of the CRTV is only really something you could do in first person without having to render the UI on top of the screen and make it feel like a mini map or something. So it felt like being able to bring that up in front of the camera without having a character in between you and the game world was the right way to go.”

For added context, having Silent Hill: Townfall in first person also enhances the overall immersion and experience of the title.
“We wanted to feel like you were searching through these people’s homes. The people of Saint Amelia and the town are the stars of the show. And the closer you are to that, the more you kind of learn about the people that are there.”
“One of the examples you’ll see early in the game is when you’re searching a cupboard, for example, you can actually look around and look at these different objects, and the goal there was to make sure that not only were you searching for items to use in the game, but you’re also learning something about the people who lived there by having a good look at what they owned and what was in their home.

Silent Hill: Townfall launches on September 24, 2026, on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
