When Square Enix revealed Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World, fans immediately noticed something unprecedented: dual female protagonists. For the first time in the franchise, Bianca and Nera, familiar faces from Dragon Quest V, step into the spotlight as children embarking on their own grand adventure.

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World Creative Producer Kento Yokota and Producer Takuma Shiraishi shared how this bold choice came to life. “When we were deciding who best to represent this game, we spoke with Yuji Horii, who is in charge of the Dragon Quest series, and this was his idea,” Shiraishi explained. A mock‑up of the game’s art style, scaled to be “very cute, very adorable,” convinced Horii that child versions of Bianca and Nera would fit seamlessly.

“Making the child version of Bianca and Nera would fit theme and style perfectly.” The result is a world where the heroines’ friendship and growth take center stage.

A World Connected, Yet Distinct

Fans naturally wondered how Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World ties back to Dragon Quest V. Yokota was careful to keep the mystery alive: “We would like to refrain from saying anything directly about the relation between the two games. Instead, we would prefer players to form their own ideas about how these games are connected.

“We definitely wanted the players to approach this game without being able to play Dragon Quest V.”

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World is designed to stand alone, focusing on Bianca and Nera’s journey as friends. “Dragon Quest V is really all about who the main character will end up with, but for this game, we’ve taken the hero out of the equation.”

“It’s about a huge adventure that these two children go on, and that’s something we really focused on.”

Balancing Joy and Convenience

Monster raising remains the beating heart of the Dragon Quest Monsters series, and the team worked hard to balance accessibility with challenge. DLC options exist to ease scouting and encounters, but Shiraishi stressed that it is definitely optional: “The DLC mentioned basically enhances the main story, not completely replaces it. You can fully enjoy everything about the game without the DLC… we made sure that you’ll never be too strong with the DLC.”

The base game is robust enough to deliver a complete experience, while DLC serves as a gentle enhancement for repeat playthroughs.

“The level of completion for this title is very high. It’s a very solid product, and so we would really appreciate it if people play through it, and then maybe on your 2nd or 3rd playthrough, use the DLC.”

Scale and Synthesis

With over 500 monsters to discover, synthesize, and raise, the scope of Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World is immense. Completing the main story of Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World takes around 30–40 hours, but full synthesis and exploration can stretch far beyond to around 60 hours.

“One thing that’s really special about this series is that to fully experience this game, it depends on how you approach the game. If you want to synthesize all of the monsters, if you want to fight all the monsters, if you want to explore everything, it could take you so many hours. In that sense, the game is very different from most RPGs of its ilk.”

Shiraishi emphasized the thrill of experimentation in Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World: “One thing the development team really wanted to ensure for the players was the excitement and surprise of synthesizing the monsters and seeing what came out.” Even veterans will encounter unexpected results, thanks to evolved synthesis routes and charming new visuals.

Visual Style and Gameplay Evolution

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World’s cuter, more stylized visuals demanded new mechanics to match, as they consider it one of the biggest changes from previous entries. “While it doesn’t exactly affect gameplay parameters or anything like that, it’s definitely one of the biggest changes that we made. It’s certainly cuter, and it’s clearly part of the same Dragon Quest Monsters series but just made with a different style.”

They pointed to features like using the waterwing can to flourish the life buds, and these are considered small but meaningful touches that align gameplay with the whimsical art direction.

The team also tried to improve the whole experience around synthesis, since it is a key aspect of Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World.

“We really tried to keep the balance in mind, compared to the previous title, about synthesizing and raising the monsters. This is something that we really tried to focus on. Another thing with regard to convenience is the synthesizing and raising monsters as the core loop. We really tried to focus on how to make that as convenient and as easy to access as well.”

Competitive Balance and Post‑Game Content

With online battles available from day one, the team is keenly aware of balance concerns. “We are aware of what players have said about the previous titleWe’re going to try our best to ensure that there is balancing between all the skills of the monsters,” they noted, while acknowledging that post‑launch adjustments may be necessary.

For those seeking replayability, the developers promise plenty to do after the credits roll, though they cannot share anything specific just yet.

Design Inspirations and Favorites

When asked about the inspirations the team took to designing new monsters for Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World, they said that respecting Akira Toriyama’s legacy was central to to the design process.

“In terms of design, we wanted to respect the designs and sensibilities of Akira Toriyama, who designed the original monsters for the majority of the series. Once we had an idea of which monsters we’d like to incorporate, the general director Horii-san ended up making the final decisions about which ones best match the Dragon Quest style and series.”

Shiraishi’s personal favorite is Fizzy, “super adorable” and equipped with the handy “bigger upper” ability. Yokota, meanwhile, remains loyal to his childhood favorite: Overkilling Machine.

Bringing Monsters to Life in 3D

For the first time in the Dragon Quest Monsters series, monsters visibly follow the protagonists in full 3D. This seemingly simple feature posed technical challenges, such as massive creatures blocking Bianca and Nera, as well as bugs with stairs and pathfinding.

“When first designing the concept of this game, that is something we absolutely wanted to include right from the get-go. DQ5 is the first time you can befriend monsters, but they would follow the caravan from the side. And then in 6, they would follow behind. Then, in the first DQ Monsters, they would follow behind like little sprites. This is something we wanted to fully realize in 3D: this concept of making friends with monsters and having them join you on an adventure, and, alas, we were able to make that happen on just sprites and real 3D animation. “

“We ran into a lot of hurdles when designing this concept, especially with monsters that are enormous. They wind up completely blocking Bianca and Nera. We had to rebalance everything to not hide them and confuse the player about who’s controlling what. We ran into all kinds of bugs, because the characters were so tiny and the monsters were so big they were getting stuck on stairs.”

Yet the payoff is significant: a stronger sense of companionship and immersion. Players can even toggle the feature off, though the developers hope most will embrace the bond it represents.

Final Thoughts from the Devs

The devs left us with a message for fans looking forward to playing the game soon.

“This game features over 500 different monsters with lots of variety among that selection… I hope that you enjoy this game with your favorite monster.”

“In terms of gameplay, the synthesizing and raising of monsters is a more evolved version of what came before in the series, and we hope you enjoy that element as well.”

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World launches on December 3, 2026, for Switch, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
