Multiple games like Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and Cyberpunk 2077 will be providing next-gen upgrades to owners of the current-gen versions. It seems to be the common practice that will ease the transition to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X for players without breaking the bank. Control, on the other hand, has other plans.

As announced by 505 Games, Control will be releasing an Ultimate Edition, which will include both “The Foundation” and the upcoming “AWE” expansions, and will come to both the current and next-gen consoles. That’s the good news.

The bad news is that owners of the current iteration of the game, basically the standard version, will NOT be getting that free upgrade path.

In short, if you’ve already purchased the game and maybe even the season pass, then you won’t be getting the free next-gen upgrade. If you plan to purchase the Ultimate Edition when it comes out later this year, that next-gen upgrade is yours for free.

That sounds like a pretty shady deal, especially since some other devs and publishers have already promised next-gen upgrades for their current-gen titles. 505 did say that they will offer more eligibility details soon, so owners of the current version may get some sort of compensation. Maybe.

The release scheduled for the Ultimate Edition is pretty complicated due to prevailing COVID conditions affecting production lines and will look as follows:

• August 27 – Steam
• September 10 – Epic Game Store, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One (Digital)
• End of 2020 – PlayStation 4 and Xbox One (Physical)
• End of 2020 – PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X (Digital)
• Early 2021 – PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X (Physical)

Controls is out now and its AWE expansion is scheduled to release on August 27.
