Captain America: Brave New World May Just Get the MCU Back on Track

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has struggled to find its footing for a while. As someone who has somewhat tuned out after Endgame, I find it challenging to follow the direction Marvel intended due to the overwhelming number of shows and series they released. Sometimes, it felt like the MCU was lost, lacking a central figure to guide its path—someone as emblematic as Captain America.

Ironically, the universe Marvel built with superheroes like Iron Man and Thor now seems to have found a clear direction, all because of a familiar human character.

Captain America: Brave New World successfully grounds the story and embraces its human elements, delivering a well-paced, thrilling, almost spy-like tale that keeps you locked in from start to finish. While it may not be as electrifying or mind-blowing as some might hope, and it does tread on being too safe and predictable at times, it seems that this could be just what the MCU needed to get back on track, paving the way for future titles like Fantastic Four to continue the journey forward.

Captain America: Brave New World Sets the Tone

To begin with, if you missed previous Marvel titles, particularly The Eternals, you might lack some context for Captain America: Brave New World. While past titles aren’t strictly necessary, they do clarify important elements of the story especially since Captain America: Brave New World ties up a lot of loose ends from past films. Nonetheless, it’s entirely possible to enjoy this film as a standalone for its entertaining value.

One of the standout features of Captain America: Brave New World is its focus on Sam Wilson, portrayed by Anthony Mackie. Once a side character to Steve Roger’s Captain America, Sam now takes on the mantle, stepping into a new era where the Avengers are no more. If there was any doubt before this film, Mackie kills it as Captain America, and has proven himself worthy to carry the legacy.

The film consistently reminds us of Sam’s humanity, emphasizing the immense pressure he faces because he isn’t as strong or talented as some of the other heroes. Despite this, he rises to the occasion, embodying the belief that if he doesn’t take on this responsibility, no one else will.

This human element makes the film more relatable than previous MCU titles. While Sam performs extraordinary feats with the help of his new suit and Vibranium-infused wings, he still needs to put in more effort to achieve what Steve Rogers could do with less. This adds a layer of realism and relatability that enriches the overall narrative.

On Your Left

The choreography in Captain America: Brave New World is superb, with intense and well-rehearsed fight scenes. However, the camerawork lacked the flair needed to elevate these sequences further. This may relate to the film’s emphasis on Sam’s human qualities, making the portrayal grounded and believable despite his advanced fighting skills.

The supporting cast delivers strong performances. Danny Ramirez reprises his role as Joaquin Torres, providing an effective and charming sidekick. Giancarlo Esposito as Sidewinder proves once again that he can play any villain role with ease. Harrison Ford, despite his age, brings a fantastic portrayal of Thaddeus Ross, and Tim Blake Nelson’s Leader adds to the film’s appeal.

Circling back to the theme of humanity, it’s notable how Ross, now the Red Hulk, retains his understanding of Sam Wilson during their explosive clash. Without giving away spoilers, Sam’s unexpected approach to Ross reveals a shred of humanity in the latter, despite the chaos he causes.

Overall, Captain America: Brave New World exceeded my fairly low expectations. I was drawn from start to finish. Despite some noticeable CGI flaws, these minor issues are easily overlooked. This film at least sets the MCU back on track, rekindling excitement for future titles, although it doesn’t do too much for itself.
