Nintendo Switch 2 Won’t Use Hall Effect Sticks and Won’t Have Achievements
In a nutshell
- No System-Wide Achievements: Nintendo has confirmed that the Switch 2 will not include a universal achievement system, though select titles like Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom will have in-app achievements.
- No Hall Effect Sticks in Joy-Cons: The Switch 2 Joy-Cons have been redesigned for improved durability, but they will not feature Hall Effect analog sticks.
In a series of interviews that went live today, Nintendo has officially confirmed that the upcoming Switch 2 will not include system-wide achievements and that its Joy-Cons will not feature Hall Effect analog sticks.
Switch 2 Joy-Cons Will Not Feature Hall Effect Sticks
In an interview with Nintendo Life, we learn the disappointing news that Hall Effect analog sticks won’t be used in the Switch 2 Joy-Cons, despite stick drift being one of the biggest offenders of the previous console.

Nintendo’s senior vice president of product development, Nate Bihldorff, confirms that while the Joy-Con 2 controllers have been redesigned from the ground up, they will not utilize Hall Effect technology but will be more durable than their predecessors.
“Well, the Joy-Con 2’s controllers have been designed from the ground up. They’re not Hall Effect sticks, but they feel really good.”
While this is the case, we’ll have to wait and see if the Pro Controller will feature this upgrade.

No System-Wide Achievements
Another interview from Polygon, the company has once again opted not to implement a console-wide achievement system for the Switch 2, despite the feature being a staple on other platforms.
Nintendo’s vice president of player and product experience, Bill Trinen, responded straightforwardly when asked about it: “Nope.”
However, Nintendo is introducing game-specific achievements for select titles. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom will feature in-app achievements via the Zelda Notes app, allowing players to track progress such as shrine completions and weapon collections.
