Moonlighter 2: The Endless Vault is the sequel to the acclaimed action roguelite shopkeeping simulator developed by Digital Sun and published by 11 bit studios. The original game followed Will, a young shopkeeper of mysterious origins who balanced running his family’s store by day with exploring dangerous dungeons by night, gathering valuable loot to sell to customers and help grow the business.

In Moonlighter 2: The Endless Vault, the tyrannical Moloch has seized control of Will’s homeland of Rynoka, forcing its residents into exile. Seeking a way back, Will and the displaced townsfolk discover the enigmatic Eternal Vault, a mysterious entity that offers untold treasures in exchange for completing a series of challenges. As Will ventures deeper into the Vault’s ever-changing depths, he may uncover the means to reclaim Rynoka, defeat Moloch, and restore his home.

Adventure Capitalist

Moonlighter 2: The Endless Vault introduces a significant evolution from its predecessor, not only with its transition from charming pixel art to fully realized 3D visuals, but also through a revamped roguelike structure. Similar to modern genre standouts, players are given strategic choices as they progress, selecting the next room or encounter on their journey through a variety of ever-changing biomes. Each run culminates in a boss encounter, rewarding those who successfully navigate the challenges along the way.

At its core, however, Moonlighter 2 remains faithful to the gameplay loop that made the original so compelling. Nights are spent venturing into dangerous dungeons in search of valuable relics, while days are dedicated to selling those treasures in your shop. As you push deeper into each biome, you’ll uncover relics of varying rarities, with greater risks yielding increasingly valuable rewards. Defeating elite enemies, mini-bosses, and biome bosses often leads to the most lucrative loot.

Like before, failure also carries consequences. Falling in battle causes you to lose half the value of the relics currently in your possession. Players can choose to return home safely using their pendant to preserve their haul or attempt another run at the cost of resetting their progress. Once back in town, managing your shop and selling your inventory completes the cycle before a new day begins.

Moonlighter 2 Dungeon

Your new home island serves as a bustling hub filled with activities and opportunities for progression. Much like the original game, collected materials can be used to improve weapons and increase Will’s survivability. As the settlement grows, additional merchants become available, offering upgrades ranging from expanded backpack storage to powerful accessories that enhance your adventures.

Apart from equipment upgrades, players can invest in various aspects of the town, including furniture stores, decorative items, and even pet-related features that help personalize the experience. Townspeople also offer quests that reward valuable schematics, unlocking stronger weapons, armor, and other upgrades. These improvements play a crucial role in tackling increasingly challenging biomes and advancing through the game’s main objectives.

Progression in Moonlighter 2 is largely tied to fulfilling requests from the Endless Vault itself. Many of these objectives revolve around meeting specific sales quotas through your shop, creating a satisfying connection between dungeon exploration and store management. As demands increase, so too do the rewards, granting access to increasingly valuable treasures and improvements for both Will and the growing community. It’s a highly addictive cycle that consistently encourages “just one more run.”

Moonlighter 2 Tresna

Combat remains a central pillar of the Moonlighter 2 experience, with players battling through three distinct biomes, each containing multiple sub-areas. While every biome introduces its own visual identity and enemy designs, enemy behavior and encounter structure can occasionally feel familiar across the different regions. As a result, some encounters may begin to feel repetitive over extended play sessions.

Players can choose from several weapon types, including one-handed swords, two-handed swords, spears, and knuckles, each offering unique strengths and playstyles. These weapons can be upgraded through the blacksmith, allowing players to further specialize their preferred build. Alongside standard attacks, every weapon features a special ability that adds another layer of strategy to combat.

A notable addition in Moonlighter 2 is the Blob Gun, which provides an effective solution against airborne enemies that are difficult to reach with melee weapons. The backpack also plays a more active role in combat, allowing players to deflect incoming projectiles and create additional opportunities during hectic encounters.

Moonlighter 2 Puzzle

Mini-bosses and elite enemies serve as more dangerous variations of standard foes, but the true highlights are the biome bosses. Each features multiple phases and distinct attack patterns that demand observation, adaptability, and precise execution. While many encounters may initially appear overwhelming, enemy patterns become increasingly recognizable with repeated attempts. Once their mechanics are understood, most fights become much more manageable, reducing some of the challenge that is present during the early hours of the game.

Endless Chore

The roguelike elements of Moonlighter 2 largely revolve around the randomized rewards and upgrades encountered during each run. Elemental effects, combat bonuses, and relic drops vary from one expedition to the next, encouraging players to adapt their approach as they progress through the dungeons. While the build variety is not as deep or transformative, experimenting with different combinations remains engaging, and discovering synergies between equipment and bonuses can lead to some satisfying runs.

Where Moonlighter 2 truly shines is in its relic collection and shopkeeping mechanics. Each biome introduces unique backpack management challenges, transforming inventory organization into a puzzle of its own. Relics come with various curses and effects that influence adjacent items, forcing players to carefully consider placement in order to maximize the value of their haul. Some curses can destroy nearby loot, while others transform relics into fragile crystals that may shatter during extraction. Managing these risks while squeezing every possible reward into your backpack creates a surprisingly compelling layer of strategy.

The shop management system remains just as rewarding as the dungeon-crawling itself. After every successful expedition, players must decide how to price and display their hard-earned treasures to maximize profits. As the shop expands, a deeper layer of strategy emerges, requiring players to balance competitive pricing, customer satisfaction, and premium offerings for wealthier patrons willing to pay top coin for rare items. The result is a satisfying economic loop that makes every dungeon run feel meaningful.

Moonlighter 2 Loot

For players looking for additional challenges, Moonlighter 2 offers biome-specific endgame trials as well as an endless Colosseum mode that allows continued relic hunting beyond the main campaign. These encounters feature tougher enemies, enhanced elite variants, and increasingly demanding combat scenarios.

Despite that, the endgame experience is where some of the game’s limitations begin to surface. Once players have established an optimal build and familiarized themselves with the core systems, progression becomes increasingly dependent on repetition rather than discovery. The game does not introduce new biomes or significant enemy scaling beyond its existing content, which can make the late-game grind feel somewhat drawn out and reduce long-term replayability.

The main campaign of Moonlighter 2 can be completed in approximately 30 to 40 hours, though fully upgrading equipment, completing optional objectives, and maximizing town progression will require a considerably larger time investment. Unfortunately, many of the Endless Vault’s late-game objectives simply demand larger quotas and longer grinds without meaningfully evolving the gameplay loop. While the challenge increases, the structure remains largely unchanged, causing progression to feel more like a test of persistence than mastery.

At the time of writing, we reviewed the 1.0 release version of Moonlighter 2 and encountered several technical issues that occasionally interrupted progression. Although future patches may address these concerns, the current experience can be frustrating when bugs occur during extended dungeon runs. Compounding the issue is the absence of a suspend or mid-run save feature while exploring dungeons. As a result, unexpected crashes, glitches, or other interruptions can force players to abandon an entire run and lose substantial progress. Given the length and importance of individual expeditions, this feels like one of the game’s most significant shortcomings and is an area that would greatly benefit from post-launch improvements.

Verdict: Wait For It…

One-More-Game-Wait
Moonlighter 2: The Endless Vault One More Game
7.5 out of 10

What we liked:

  • Dynamic shop mini-game
  • Loot puzzle mini-game is addictive
  • Story-based quest progression keeps you glued

What we didn't like:

  • Tedious combat especially by the endgame
  • Endgame content lacking
  • Buggy performance
  • Lack of game suspension during incursions frustrating especially if you're forced to reset

Moonlighter 2: The Endless Vault takes a bold step away from its predecessor, featuring a striking visual overhaul and a modernized roguelike structure that distinguishes it from the original. While longtime fans may miss the nostalgic charm of the pixel-art presentation, this sequel successfully establishes its own identity and offers an experience that can be enjoyed independently, even by players who have never touched the first game.

There is no shortage of content to explore, and the combination of dungeon crawling, inventory management, and shopkeeping remains as compelling as ever. The game’s addictive gameplay loop consistently rewards progression and experimentation, making it easy to lose hours chasing one more successful run.

That said, Moonlighter 2 is not without its shortcomings. A repetitive endgame, limited replayability once the core systems have been mastered, and several technical issues hold the experience back from reaching its full potential. Many of these concerns could be addressed through future patches and post-launch support, making the game one that may be worth revisiting as it continues to evolve.
