Sony confirms backwards compatibility won’t extend to PS3, PS2, and PS1

Putting it to rest.

Despite the PlayStation 5 promising a 99% compatibility rate with PlayStation 4 games, Sony has fully confirmed that PS3, PS2, and PS1 titles will not be supported.

This comes from a Famitsu interview with PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan (translations care of Siliconera), basically saying that while producing the technology for the console, SSD, and DualSense, there wasn’t enough time to work on compatibility.

Famitsu: We were also surprised when we heard that it will have 99% compatibility with PS4 titles. By the way, will there be compatibility with PS1, PS2, and PS3 titles?

Jim Ryan: We keep in mind the engineering specialized for the PS5, as we produced the device. In the midst of that, the PS4 already has 100 million players; we thought they ought to want to play PS4 titles on the PS5 as well indeed, so we included compatibility with the PS4. While implementing that, we also focused our efforts on taking in the high-speed SSD and the new controller DualSense at the same time. So, unfortunately, we couldn’t reach the implementation of such compatibilities.

It’s not like we didn’t already know this, right? Maybe some are in denial, but now that its been officially confirmed by Ryan himself, we can finally put all of this to rest. Ubisoft already gave us a hint about this earlier this month so it shouldn’t have been totally a surprise.

On the other hand, the PlayStation Plus Collection has been announced, which will instantly give early adopters of the PlayStation 5 an instant PS4 library, ranging from games like God of War to Bloodborne and Days Gone.

The PlayStation 5 will be priced at $499 (around PHP25,000) for the Standard Edition and $399 around PHP20,000) for the Digital Edition. Both editions will release on November 12 in selected territories (US, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and South Korea) and November 19 worldwide.
