The acquisition of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft has left a lot more questions than answers, with “Will Call of Duty still be multiplatform?” being one of the most repeated over the course of the past month. Well, Microsoft has made its stance, and while it didn’t come from Phil Spencer himself, a statement from Microsoft President Brad Smith would be more than enough.

On a Microsoft blog post (not the usual Xbox news post), Smith shared telling statements about the fate of Activision Blizzard titles on Sony and Nintendo’s console, which you can view in its entirety below:

First, some commentators have asked whether we will continue to make popular content like Activision’s Call of Duty available on competing platforms like Sony’s PlayStation. The obvious concern is that Microsoft could make this title available exclusively on the Xbox console, undermining opportunities for Sony PlayStation users.

To be clear, Microsoft will continue to make Call of Duty and other popular Activision Blizzard titles available on PlayStation through the term of any existing agreement with Activision. And we have committed to Sony that we will also make them available on PlayStation beyond the existing agreement and into the future so that Sony fans can continue to enjoy the games they love. We are also interested in taking similar steps to support Nintendo’s successful platform. We believe this is the right thing for the industry, for gamers and for our business.

Based on this statement alone, it seems pretty clear that not only Call of Duty, but “other popular Activision Blizzard titles” will be made available “beyond the existing agreement and into the future.”

Microsoft seems extra charitable here, but again while it may be a good sign for Sony and Nintendo, it would be wise to take things a step at a time and see how future announcements go, especially after the deal is approved and completed. If you remember, the Bethesda acquisition took all those IP’s along with them such as Starfield and made them exclusive, so we’ll have to wait and see how this goes.
