Hideki Sato, often referred to as the “Father of SEGA Hardware,” has reportedly passed away.

Reports of Sato’s passing first surfaced via the Japanese SEGA history publication Beep21, noting that he passed away on February 13, 2026. According to the announcement, which reads (roughly translated):

Hideki Sato and Career at SEGA

Sato’s career spanned decades, during which he helped define the era of arcade gaming and the “console wars.” From the early days of the SG-1000 to the Dreamcast, Sato was the driving force behind the consoles that made SEGA a household name.

Sato joined SEGA in 1971, and under his guidance, moved the company from arcade dominance into the living room. He was famously instrumental in the design of the Mega Drive (known as the Genesis in North America). In the early 2000s, he became President of SEGA as the company moved away from hardware toward software development and publishing.

Sato officially retired from SEGA in 2008.

Rest in peace, Sato-san. Thank you for the memories and the hardware that defined a generation.
