Animal Crossing: New Horizons is now the second best selling game on the Nintendo Switch
Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a smashing success. As reported a couple of months ago, sales of the latest title in the franchise hit staggering numbers, contributing largely to the spike in Nintendo Switch sales over the past quarter. Part of this can be attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic, forcing users to stay indoors and look for alternative ways to entertain themselves.
In the latest financial report, Nintendo is literally swimming in money right now as it has reported over a 500% increase in net profit on a yearly comparison. Over the past few months, Switch shortages have been reported nearly worldwide and it has become the hottest commodity in gaming.
The culprit? Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
Since its release, Animal Crossing: New Horizons has sold 22.4 million copies, already outselling bestsellers such as Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (19.99 Million), The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (18.60 Million), Pokemon Sword / Shield (18.22 Million), and Super Mario Odyssey (18.06 Million). As of writing, the only game it has not overtaken is Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which stands at 26.74 Million units, making Animal Crossing the second best selling Switch title.
That’s quite the feat, considering its only been around for less than a year. A fully produced talk show has made the game its home, with celebrities like Danny Trejo and Elijah Wood enjoying the phenomenon as well. Almost everybody is playing the game.
How long before it overtakes Mario Kart 8 Deluxe? It probably just a matter of time and it would certainly be most impressive if the game can maintain this blistering pace. Whatever the case may be, the game is a certified hit, which Tom Nook is certainly enjoying.
