Somewhat buried amidst the other news is Sony acquiring the premiere fighting game tournament in the world, EVO.
An announcement over at the PlayStation Blog formally welcomes the premiere fighting game tournament to the family, in partnership with RTS. Head of Business Development for EVO Mark Julio pointed out that despite being partnered with Sony, the event is still open to all platforms and that the strategic partnership is all about bringing “amazing tournaments and competitive gaming experiences” for the community.
The 2020 tournament was supposed to be an online only event but was cancelled due to issues surrounding its former president Joey Cuellar.
EVO 2021 is scheduled to push through this year on August 6-8 and 13-15 as an online event. The current lineup of participating games are Tekken 7, Street Fighter V: Champion Edition, Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate, and Guilty Gear Strive.
