2021 League of Legends World Championships returns to China
League of Legends Esports (LOL Esports) announced that the 11th League of Legends World Championships (Worlds 2021) will be returning to China. This time, the annual international tournament will go back to the multi-city format with the Finals being held in Shenzhen, China.
The road to Worlds 2021 has begun with the start of Season 11 where more than a 100 teams in a dozen regions begin their journey to represent their region at the international tournament. Worlds 2020 took everyone by surprise by featuring the world’s most advanced mixed reality stage and it’ll be nice to see how they can top that one for next year.
“After a year full of unexpected challenges, amazing competition, and major milestones for our sport, we’re looking forward to a season that should be even more thrilling. It’s only fitting that we return to China, home to our biggest league and tens of millions of longtime fans, to produce the world’s highest-caliber esports event in one of China’s most innovative cities,”
John Needham, Global Head of Esports at Riot Games
All eyes will be on the League of Legends Champions Korea teams and DAMWON Gaming this year to see if they can defend their World Championships this year.
LOL Esports and Riot China have yet to announce the additional host cities later this year.
2021 marks the start of a new decade of LOL Esports competition and continued growth. LOL Esports and its events boast a roster of global sponsors including Alienware, Axe, Bose, Cisco, Louis Vuitton, Mastercard, Mercedes-Benz, OPPO, Red Bull, Secretlab, Spotify, and State Farm.
