Call of Duty to Remain on PlayStation Thanks to a ‘Binding Agreement’ with Microsoft
As the Microsoft and Activision Blizzard acquisition is almost certainly coming to a close, it’s been revealed that a “binding agreement” has been signed to keep Call of Duty on PlayStation.
Xbox boss Phil Spencer confirms the said agreement, saying that he is pleased to announce the signing, and he “looks forward to a future where players globally have more choice to play their favorite games.”
Microsoft President Brad Smith also echoes the announcement, saying that it has been their commitment from the start to address the concerns of regulators and industry parties and part of that commitment is them remaining “focused on ensuring that Call of Duty remains available on more platforms and for more consumers than ever before.”
At the moment, it is not clear what the terms of the agreement are. There have been previous deals that have been signed with Nintendo and various cloud gaming platforms, so it remains to be seen what this deal with PlayStation has.
Update: Microsoft, via the head of Global Communications Kari Perez, has confirmed to various outlets that the signed deal is a 10-year deal that only encompasses Call of Duty, which is a similar deal with Nintendo. Microsoft’s original deal was to keep “all existing Activision console titles on Sony, including future versions in the Call of Duty franchise or any other current Activision franchise on Sony through December 31st, 2027.” Whether or not this new deal is better or worse remains to be seen.
It’s been well documented that Sony has refused to sign the deal in the past, even saying that Microsoft may release “buggy versions” of Call of Duty once the acquisition has been approved. What changed over the course of the many months that led Sony to finally agree is quite the question that we hope gets answered as details of the agreement surface.
There’s also no news if other Activision Blizzard IPs such as Diablo, Spyro, Overwatch, and much more will remain multiplatform or will be made exclusive once the deal closes, similar to what happened with Bethesda IPs.
What do you think about this newly signed agreement between Sony and Microsoft for Call of Duty?
