PlayStation 5 pre-orders won’t catch anyone off guard, may be limited to 1 per customer
Over the weekend, we got a taste of what the next generation holds for us when Geoff Keighley walked us through his first impressions of the DualSense controller. Towards the end of the presentation, Keighley was joined by Eric Lempel, PlayStation Worldwide Marketing Head, and answered a few burning questions regarding the PlayStation 5.
You can view the whole presentation below but if you want to skip to the discussion with Lempel, skip on to the 8:20 mark.
The past couple of weeks have seen the PlayStation 5 pre-order rumors shoot up like crazy, indicating that pre-orders would be happening soon and Sony could drop it all on us at any given time. All the Amazon leaks and placeholder pages seemed to indicate such an event happening, which gave users more things to be wary of, as slots may run out quickly. Local retailers have also begun to gauge interest on the upcoming next generation console from Sony.
“We don’t know what happened there, we had nothing to do with it. I got a message from someone saying people are lining up at stores and we had no idea why. I think it’s safe to say that we’ll let you know when pre-orders will happen, it’s not gonna happen in a minute’s notice.“
With one statement, Lempel crushes all the pre-order rumors basically saying that users will know about it and will be able to prepare for it when the announcement goes live, so there’s no need to worry about it at the moment.
Meanwhile, talks over at the ResetEra forums have found out via some code references that upcoming PlayStation 5 pre-orders, at least from the PlayStation Direct page, may be limited to one per person, whether it be the standard version or the digital version. The error message when trying to add more than one unit to your cart reads as “You can only purchase one version of the PS5™ Console: Disc or Digital. You have already added one PS5™ console to your cart.”
Also, due to more source code snooping, some PlayStation 4 peripherals are being tagged as “PS5 Compatible”, and while it does not confirm the fact, it only means that there will be some peripherals or games that will be usable once the PlayStation 5 releases, as the tag suggests.
Locally, retailers have not released any details yet and we can be sure that once Sony worldwide announces a date and price, our stores will follow suit shortly. We can only hope that stores will also follow the ‘1 unit 1 customer’ rule so that users who want to purchase a unit will be able to get one should they choose to, and not through some overpriced reseller or scalper.
The PlayStation 5 is scheduled to release on the Holiday of 2020.
