A new Nintendo Switch console is reportedly coming in 2021 if a report from a Taiwanese newspaper is to be believed.

The paper in question is United Daily News, and coming from a translation care of VGC, it cites that production of the “new” console will begin later this year, as soon as Q4, and is reportedly scheduled to launch on Q1 2020. Macronix, Pixart, and Weltrend are named as the specific manufacturers that will be working on the new console. A few more translation notes from Resetera claims that the new Switch variant will feature “better interactions/communications, and will have a new display quality”, indicating better internal components and overall hardware.

Bloomberg has also reported on this, saying “The specifications of the new machine have yet to be finalized, though the Kyoto-based company has looked into including more computing power and 4K high-definition graphics.” While it would be hard to put in that much power into a handheld, it would be interesting to see how far Nintendo can go without compromising portability, especially since this is leaning towards next-gen territory care of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

It has been quite a while that rumors have been swirling about a Switch “Pro” variant, in line with previous iterations that Nintendo is known for such as the DS / 3DS family of handhelds. If anything, the Switch Pro would have the obvious upgrades of better screen resolution, more powerful components, possible 4K support, and better battery life, among others. This is our wish list, at least, and I’m sure consumers would have other things in mind.

The lifetime Switch sales have already hit a massive sales numbers, hitting 55.77 million units a couple of months back thanks in help to titles like Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which is now the 2nd highest selling game on the Switch next to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. It wouldn’t be totally out of this world that a “Pro” variant be in the works, as Nintendo has seemingly cracked the portable console formula.

At this point, if true, the next question is how much?
